What is being birthed in me right now? First I want to say this. I am not the mother of preschoolers. I am 55 years old. I have 5 kids ages 25 to 14. I totally know what it feels like to fall into bed (or even fall asleep on the sofa) and be so tired you do not even recall dreaming. The dishes, dirty diapers and laundry consume your time, and you escape on the computer to look at everyone else’s Pinterest page. You have no energy to create anything. You are too busy cleaning up the messes your 2 and 4-year-olds has made. I’ve been there & more. My oldest daughter Jessica has autism. And while women in my neighborhood had coffee and playdates, I would sit in Doctors’ offices waiting with Jessica and my 2nd daughter Nicole. We went to hundreds of specialists and therapy sessions. We spent 100’s of uncomfortable hours waiting. Nicole (who now has a Master’s degree in Art) would spend her time coloring. I had to spend my time calming Jessica. So when I describe my creative renaissance, please realize it has not always been as it is now. We go through seasons. I’m in a creative season.
The biggest project I have on my plate is a workshop I’m hosting for 10 days in June. I have women coming (MOPS Leaders) from Uganda, Albania, Zambia and the USA. Some local women may also participate. I’m going to teach sack gardening and soap making. Some of the leaders that are taking part in this workshop work with very poor women. The women in our teen MOPS group in Kampala, Uganda lead by Sylvia Nantango make 1 dollar or less a day. The gardens can help these women provide extra food for their families. The soap can help them generate extra income. Right now I’m working on the curriculum for the workshop. I’m also working in my own garden. I start plants from seeds. I have bags of summer flower bulbs to plant. I have thousands of weeds to pull. I’m working on all the window boxes and hanging baskets this weekend. My garden is my creative outlet. Each year it gets better and better.
And I’m grateful I can use it to help teach women to grow food. I cannot explain why God gave me this passion to learn sustainable garden methods over 10 years ago. But it is a passion that has finally found a purpose. And last summer I got this urgent urge to learn how to make soap. I can only describe this sudden urge to make soap as a God thing. And now I’m experimenting with a mosquito repellant soap made with essential oils. Uganda has the world’s highest rate of malaria. Nearly half the population contracts malaria every year. I have Pinterest pages of my garden. If you would like to donate money to the teen MOPS group in Uganda you can do that on PayPal or the go fund me page. Right now we need 750 USD to pay tuition fees for 3 of the moms. They will be starting Tailoring College May 1st.
