advent calander days 1-5 looking back on the year 2022

Today is December 1st. I am going to review 2022 in 24 posts with 2 days from each month. It's s Suubi Teen MOPS advent calendar. Today we highlight the month of January. In January all our women received the generous donation of new water filters. We try to give our women new water filters every 2 years. And every 2 years they get new mosquito nets. It's far cheaper to prevent sickness than to treat sickness. Thousands of children in Uganda die each year from sickness caused by bacteria in water. In Kampala, the toilets get flooded this time of year. That waste goes into the water and causes typhoid fever and other diseases. People have to spend up to 1/4 th of their income on firewood to boil the water. And of course, the need for wood drives deforestation in East Africa. The sprouts water filter does not prevent all sickness, but it definitely reduces the number of cases of sickness we have to pay for. Thank God for the generosity of those who gave to buy our water filters!

If you wish to donate towards bednets you can find ways to give on our website. A bednet cost 15 USD. We need 135 new nets. Thank you.

Day 2
Advent calendar day 2.
In January 2022 Nicole and I traveled to Uganda to impart some skills. The biggest legacy was teaching them how to mix compost and plant seeds. Nicole got Covid. We ended up spending an extra 9 days in Uganda. That was expensive and especially stressful for Juergen. Tomorrow Nicole and Juergen go to Uganda. They also have skills to impart. The risk of Ebola is super low. Thank God for this. But there is the risk of chickenpox or actually shingles. Some of our Suubi kids have chickenpox. It's too late to get a shingles vaccination. Please pray for them to remind healthy and safe as they go. They carry 1000's of seeds. The entire community will benefit from the skills they are bringing.

Day 3-
Advent calendar day 3
Today I dropped Nicole and Juergen off at Frankfurt Airport. They will spend 20 hours getting to Uganda. Please pray for their safety and health as they build the Suubi center.
Last February a giant storm knocked down our goat house. We had to build a new goat house. The goats continue to multiply.

Advent calendar day 4
Juergen and Nicole made it to Uganda. Before a day of shopping for flooring and paint, they got to eat a big breakfast at Cafe Java in Entebbe. I am not posting the photo of Juergen because he looks pretty ruff. But it was a long trip with hardly any sleep. They go to the Suubi center after they are done shopping. Hopefully, they can get some rest tonight.
Last February they installed gutters on the kitchen of the Suubi center. It is a 10,000-liter tank. This tank provides most of the drinking water for the center. They are conservative with water. We had the tank put on a permanent platform in August. There was a 2nd 10,000-liter tank installed in November. Water or a lack of enough water is a serious problem for us. There are 31 people at the Suubi center. And we have dogs, cats, and chickens. There are also gardens. You need water to grow crops commercially. But the proceeds from the crops are needed to give us long-term sustainable financing. I feel like all I do is raise money. I don't want to raise money forever. I want them to raise enough money from ginger and avocado trees so they can pay for the majority of the expenses. So water is an issue. The water caption has helped but we need a well.

Advent calendar day 5
Last March we had a chicken coop built at the Suubi center. It's not a commercial chicken operation. The birds are there to produce eggs for the people at the center. We let the chickens free range. They eat a lot of weeds and bugs. They are healthy birds. The women have also learned to sprout grains. When you allow the chicken food to sprout, it increases the nutrition the chickens get. It also increases in volume. You save money because they do not have to use as much to feed the chickens. We also use the manure in our compost. We are teaching organic gardening.
