At the Market

Today was market day. They did not sell a lot of soap. The packaging was too nice. People did not believe it was handmade. This is a handmade market. So next time they may package the soap in the cloth bags made at the sewing workshop and have photos of them making soap at the table. The hotels and stores wanted the good packaging. And the craft market needs something else. So they were not discouraged. In fact, they felt empowered to get out there and show off what they have made. I guess many of the women at the market encouraged them to keep at it. They also had a slow start when they started to sell things. And many people told them how great they felt the project was. That Suubi was not just giving them a handout. That they were being given a skill. And they were being given the chance to learn to make it on their own. I was a little discouraged when Sylvia told me they did not sell a lot of soap. My hopes were very high. But she also told me she never saw Guinean(one of the teen moms) smíle so much. That they were all so excited just to be there. And I remembered the saying...the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. And I am proud they have stepped out. And they will be there every Friday. So we can use your prayers. They stepped out...and they will learn to sell the soap. We will make a big sign to put in front of the table. And they will figure out how to sell their soap. If you are ever in Kampala, please come to visit our soap group at Friday African market for tourists... It's at Buganda Road... Right after Gghadaffi Mosque.
